Watch This Before Building A French Cleat Wall!

So I set about designing my own and I'm genuinely shocked at how easy these french cleat locks are to make and how we...

Nice design. I would say a jig with 1/4" drill holes would be more useful as 4/4 boards are the most commonly used in woodworking and a dowel or tenon is only supposed to be 1/3 the thickness of the board. It is too bad you epoxied the steel inserts into the wood, you could have drilled the holes in the wood to have an interference fit with the steel inserts so the inserts could be hammered/pressed out and swapped with steel inserts with a thicker wall and a smaller center hole for smaller diameter dowels.

I saw this review. Plastic wood was stuck in my head. I go to use... and it's crumbly crap. I go back to find this review, "GREAT GOOGLY MOOGLY! I remembered the throw away option!!!" Having some Famowood sent out post haste. As a side note, the packaging for the water based Plastic Wood does not seem airtight. Maybe this accounts for some comments with good experiences and some bad.

Love it. Only thing I'd do differently is I'd drill 2 small holes in the bottom of one of the cross members, one near each leg, feed a small rope through and tie a knot. Then put 2 small notches in the other cross members with a bevel on the outside. Then tie knots in the other side of the rope so you could pull it, feed it into the notch, and the knot would be held in the bevel. If I had to tie the knot every time, I'd never use it

That's a Japanese copy of a Singer 15 series machine with zig-zag that didn't really get out there until 1960ish. So ten years newer than your mother remembered. Still, that machine will last a long time and complete a lot of jobs. Andytube channel has a lot of sewing machine restorations. Jason of all trades channel is good for projects and finding vintage machines.

Thanks. Sturdy design with wide flat surface at ends. Rope part seems clumsy. How about include two small pieces with notches that easily slide onto each base support crosswise? These could have holes like the others, so all pieces can be bolted together for storage. Anyone building this will want to see the finished product upfront from different angles and a lot more visuals of the sawhorse and it being built, even narration, rather than a guy talking. I watch these without sound.

I am very doubtful that it could match shellac which can be polished out. I am sure it is great for a good looking finish but in fine furniture making shellac can produce an ultra polished finish.

Great video. I'm curious, what are thoughts on using wing nuts or threaded knobs on the legs, just in case you want to break it down? Could also use a threaded rod and threaded knob instead of a rope... Mount a couple clips on the inside of one of the legs to hold the rod when not in use...

My only disappointment with Titebond glue, used as a filler (mixed with saw dust of course) is that no matter how much its color approximates that of the wood, once it dries out it changes color and goes very dark. I've used Titeebond II and III- same problem with both. The sanding is very hard and messy (the glue turns into paste due to the heat during sanding) but I try to remove as much as possible before the glue dries out. Alternatively one can use an angle grinder with a sand pad attached to it as opposed to using an orbital sander. Much quicker removal, that way.

Timbermate is the best I have found. I used a professional grade at a cabinet shop I worked. If it started drying out you used lacquer thinner to fix. Didn’t like the smell or cost but it did work great. I’ve used most of what you compared in this video but I really like the water base Timbermate. Just spray on a mist of water and stir. Thanks for comparing these!
